일본은 홋카이도 시바견이 있다.

시바견은 일본 토종으로 외국에서도 인기 있는 개다. 6종류의 시바견이 있으며 1936년부터 일본 토종개로 분류하고 있다. 머리는 좋은 편이 아니고 잘 무는 습관이 있지만 표정이나 행동이 촌스러워서 매우 인기 있는 개다.

Shiba Inu (柴犬) is a kind of Japanese native to Japan. Male height 38-41 cm, female is breed of 35-38 cm. One of the seven was designated as a natural monument of Japan Japanese species (extant in 6 dogs), 12/16/1936 is specified. Most cattle in Japan. According to Ken hozonkai, currently  Japanese species have been bred in Japan (6 breeds) of the Shiba Inu is about 80%. Popular even outside of Japan. Classified as small dogs.

柴犬（しばいぬ）は、日本原産の日本犬の一種。オスは体高38 - 41cm、メスは35 - 38cmの犬種。日本の天然記念物に指定された7つの日本犬種（現存は6犬種）の1つで、指定は1936年（昭和11年）12月16日。日本における飼育頭数は最も多い。日本犬保存会によれば、現在[いつ?]日本で飼育されている日本犬種（6犬種）のうち、柴犬は約80%を占める。日本国外でも人気が高い。小型犬に分類される。
