몰타의 건물 풍경

이는 몰타 제도에서 유일하게 채굴 가능한 광물 자원이며

 말 그대로 국가의 풍경을 정의한다.

석회암은 옛날부터 채석되어 건축에 사용되었다.

세계에서 가장 오래된 독립 사원부터 들판, 장엄한 요새,

웅장한 교회, 호화로운 궁전, 소박한 타운하우스의 윤곽을 이루는

마른 돌무더기 벽에 이르기까지 우리의 역사는 사실상 석회암에 새겨져 있다.

 

지중해 중앙에 있는 이 작은 암석은 단지 316km2에 불과하며 크기는 작지만

 깊은 직사각형 구멍이 있는 채석장으로 화분에 심겨져 있다.

대부분의 몰타 석조 건물은 부드러운 글로비게리나 석회암으로

건축되어 국가 특유의 황금색을 띠고 있다.

중간 지층은 글로비게리나 유공충(globigerina foraminifera)이라고 불리는

 매우 작은 갑각류에서 그 이름을 따온 부드러운 글로비제리나 석회암이다.

이것이 몰타의 건축용 돌이다.

그 위에는 몰타에서 가장 부드러운 암석인 얇은 블루 클레이(Blue Clay)가 놓여 있으며,

이는 불침투성이며 귀중한 담수판의 바닥을 형성한다.

 

It’s the only exploitable mineral resource the Maltese Islands are endowed with, 

and it quite literally defines the country’s landscape. 

Limestone has been quarried and used for construction since time immemorial. 

From the oldest free-standing temples in the world to the dry stone rubble walls outlining fields, 

majestic fortifications, grand churches, opulent palazzos and modest townhouses, 

our history is virtually etched in limestone.

 

This tiny rock in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea,

 covering a mere 316km2 is potted with quarries which are often deep,

 rectangular holes that are albeit small in size.

 Most Maltese masonry buildings are constructed out of the softer Globigerina limestone, 

giving the country its characteristic golden hue. 
The middle strata is the soft Globigerina limestone which takes its name

from a very tiny crustacean called globigerina foraminifera.

This is maltese building stone. Above it lies thin Blue Clay, Malta’s softest rock,

which is impermeable and forms the floor of a precious freshwater table. 

 

 

これはマルタ諸島で唯一採掘可能な鉱物資源であり、

文字通りこの国の景観を特徴づけています。

石灰岩は古代から採掘され、建築に使用されてきました。

世界最古の独立した寺院から、野原の輪郭を描く乾いた瓦礫の壁、

壮大な要塞、壮大な教会、豪華な宮殿、質素なタウンハウスに至るまで、

私たちの歴史は事実上石灰岩に刻まれています。

 

地中海中央部にあるこの小さな岩は、面積わずか 316 km2 で、

小さいながらも深い長方形の穴が開いた採石場に埋め込まれています。

マルタの石造りの建物のほとんどは柔らかいグロビゲリナ石灰岩で作られており、

この国に独特の黄金色を与えています。
中間層は柔らかいグロビゲリナ石灰岩で、

その名前はグロビゲリナ有孔虫と呼ばれる非常に小さな甲殻類に由来しています。

こちらはマルタ産の建築石です。

その上にはマルタで最も柔らかい岩であるブルークレイの薄い層があり、

不浸透性で貴重な淡水プレートの底を形成しています。
