모노레일

모노레일은 1개의 레일의 진로를 유도되어 달리는 궤도계 교통 기관. 어원은 "한가지"을 뜻하는 접두어"물건"과 궤를 의미한다"레일". 하지만 엄밀히 말하면"1개의 레일(주로)"이 아닌 것도 섞였고,"일반의 니조식 철도와는 다른 것의 총칭"로서 기능하고 있다. 일본에서 모노레일은 철도로 분류되고 법령상 철도 사업 법에 의거한 "철도(현수식 철도/과좌식 철도)"과 궤도 법에 따라"궤도(현수식 모노레일/과좌식 모노레일)"이 존재한다. 이는 건설 시기에 따른 적용된 법령이 다르기 때문인 시스템상 별 차이는 없다. 초기 개통된 노선(쇼난 모노레일까지)는 철도 사업 법(옛 지방 철도 법)이 적용됐다. 기타큐슈 모노레일 이후에 개통한 노선은 이른바 도시 모노레일로 도로 정비와 일체화되고 건설된 것으로,"노면 전차의 고가화"라는 해석에 따른 궤도 법이 적용되고 있다. 단, 특정 시설 내의 이동 수단의 성격이 강한 디즈니 리조트 라인에 대해서는 철도 사업 법이 적용되고 있다.2009년 현재, 모노레일에는 신교통 시스템 같은 철도 및 궤도의 혼재 노선은 없다.

モノレールとは、1本の軌条により進路を誘導されて走る軌道系交通機関。語源は「一つのもの」を意味する接頭語「モノ」と軌道を意味する「レール」。ただし厳密には「1本のレール（走路）」ではないものもまざっており、「一般の二条式鉄道とは異なるものの総称」として機能している。日本においてモノレールは鉄道に分類され、法令上、鉄道事業法に基づく「鉄道（懸垂式鉄道／跨座式鉄道）」と軌道法に基づく「軌道（懸垂式モノレール／跨座式モノレール）」が存在する。ただし、これは建設時期により適用された法令が異なるためでありシステム上特段の差はない。初期に開通した路線（湘南モノレールまで）は鉄道事業法（旧地方鉄道法）が適用された。北九州モノレール以降に開通した路線は、いわゆる都市モノレールとして道路整備と一体化して建設された事から、「路面電車の高架化」という解釈により軌道法が適用されている。ただし、特定施設内の移動手段の性格が強いディズニーリゾートラインについては鉄道事業法が適用されている。2009年現在では、モノレールには新交通システムのような鉄道と軌道の混在路線はない。
