영원한 브랜드 에르메스

에르메스(Hermès International)는 1837년 설립된 프랑스의 명품 브랜드이다.1837년 티에리 에르메스가 파리에서 창업했다. 원래 마구 용품과 안장을 판매하는 회사였으나, 자동차 산업이 발전하면서 가방이나 지갑과 같은 피혁 제품으로 사업을 전환하여 성공하였다. 마차 모양 로고를 사용하는 이유는 이러한 역사에서 기원했다. 에르메스는 프랑스에서 가방에 최초로 지퍼를 사용하여 만들어 보급하기도 했다. 이는 티에리 에르메스의 손자가 세계대전 중 미국을 방문했을 때, 미국에서 지퍼를 보고 들여와서 당시 프랑스내 지퍼사용 가방 특허를 내고 독점권을 행사하였다. 그 밖에도 그레이스 켈리와 제인 버킨의 이름을 딴 ‘켈리 가방’과 ‘버킨 가방’이 유명하다.에르메스 주식의 71%는 에르메스 가문이, 17%는 LVMH가 소유하고 있다.

Hermès International S.A., Hermès of Paris, or simply Hermès  is a French high fashion luxury goods manufacturer established in 1837. It specializes in leather, lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, perfumery, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear. Its logo, since the 1950s, is of a Duc carriage with horse. Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski is the current creative director.

Thierry Hermès was born in Krefeld, Germany, to a French father and a German mother. The family moved to France in 1828. In 1837, Hermès first established a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, dedicated to serving European noblemen.He created high-quality wrought harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade,winning several awards including the first prize in its class in 1855 and again in 1867 at the Expositions Universelles in Paris.Hermès's son, Charles-Émile,took over management from his father in 1880 and moved the shop to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains. With the help of his sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice, Charles-Émile introduced saddlery and started selling his products retail.The company catered to the élite of Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and the Americas. In 1900, the firm offered the Haut à Courroies bag, specially designed for riders to carry their saddles with them.

エルメス社の母体になったのは、ティエリー・エルメス（Thierry Hermès, 1801年 - 1878年）が1837年、マドレーヌ寺院界隈、現在のパリ9区にあたるバス＝デュ＝ルンパール通り (Rue Basse-du-Rempart) に開いた馬具工房である。ナポレオン3世やロシア皇帝などを顧客として発展した。1878年、ティエリーの息子である2代目シャルル・エミール・エルメスの時代に、パリ万博に出品した鞍が金賞を獲得する。

1879年に現在の本店があるパリ8区フォーブル・サントノーレ通り24番地へ工房を移転。ティエリーの孫にあたる3代目のエミール＝モーリス（モリス）・エルメス（Émile-Maurice Hermès, 1871年 - 1951年）は事業の多角化に着手した。1892年には、馬具製作の技術を基にエルメス最初のバッグ、サック・オータクロア（オタクロワ）（sac haut-à-courroie, 現在の名前はオータクロアまたはオタクロワ））を製作。1927年に腕時計を発表。さらに服飾品・装身具・香水などの分野にも手を広げ、それらの製品のデザイン、製造、販売をすべて手がける会社になった。
