1890년(메이지 23년)에 현재의 와카야마 현 구 시모토초 앞바다에서 발생한 엘 투 루루호 조난 사건으로 일본의 대응이 평가되면서 양국의 우호 관계가 구축되었고 친일 국가다.

In 1890, the friendly relations between Japan and the United States were established because of the evaluation of Japan's response to the disaster in the Ertuğrul disaster, which occurred near the present day in Kushimoto-cho, Wakayama Prefecture.

1890年（明治23年）に、現在の和歌山県串本町沖で発生したエルトゥールル号遭難事件での日本の対応が評価されたことなどから、両国の友好関係が築かれている。
