축구 월드컵(W배)러시아 대회에서 1차 리그 H세트의 일본은 19일 사란스크에서의 첫 경기에서 전회 8강의 콜롬비아를 2-1로 꺾고 승리 발진했다. 오오 사코(브레멘)이 결승점을 뽑았다.6개 대회 연속 6번째 출전 일본은 전반 3분 처진 선발로 나선 카가와(도르트문트)의 슛이 상대를 한번에 퇴장한 반칙을 부르고, PK를 획득. 이 6분에 스스로 성공시켰다. 그러나 이 39분 10명으로 된 콜롬비아 킨테로에 FK를 직접 결정되고 쫓겼지만 후반 28분 교체 출전의 혼다(파추카)의 왼쪽 CK에 오오 사코가 머리로 모두 역전 결승 골을 빼앗았다.국제 축구 연맹(FIFA)랭킹 61위의 일본은 이 16위 콜롬비아에 대한 과거 통산 1무 2패로, 전회 1차 리그 최종전에서도 1-4로 패했다.
