총무성의 최신 데이터에 따르면 2016년 일본인의 수는 기록적인 축소를 맞고 있지만 증가하는 외국인 인구를 포함하면 인구 통계의 전망은 거기까지 어둡다는 것도 아닌 것 같다.현재 일본에는 230만명의 외국인이 거주하며 지난해 거의 15만명 증가, 일본의 총인구 감소 수를 절반으로 상쇄했다.

2017년 통계에 따르면 243,662 필리핀인이 일본에 살고 있으며
2016년에 비하여 14,067 명이 증가하였다.
