Both Japan and Peru sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and experience frequent earthquakes and accompanying destruction. In addition to these seismic hazards, climate change-induced disasters — occurring more frequently and with greater severity — are pushing governments to focus on preparation and recovery. Earlier this year, for example, El Niño costero swept through Peru, flooding roads, demolishing homes, and affecting the lives of over a million people. But how can governments strengthen resilience to these disasters and effectively mitigate their growing risks?

Nancy Ann Lange-Kuczynski is First Lady of Peru, wife of President Pedro-Pablo Kuczynski. She has been strongly committed to projects promoting children’s health and education, public safety, and disaster prevention.Originally from Wisconsin, USA, she previously served as the chief of staff of a state senator in Wisconsin, and worked as an investment advisor. Over the course of her career, she has worked in over 40 countries and spent many years in Asia, particularly in Japan. She holds a BA in political science and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
