마다가스카르 섬은 세계에서 4번째로 큰 섬이다. 마다가스카르의 전체 면적은 587,041km²로 세계에서 46번째로 큰 나라이다. 동쪽으로는 가파른 절벽이 있어 중앙 고원이 있고 열대우림과 마주한다.이 섬은 아프리카 대륙과 멀리 떨어져 있어 호랑이꼬리여우원숭이 등 이 섬에서만 발견되는 독특한 동식물종이 많다.
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. The total area of Madagascar is the 46th largest country in the world, with 587 km ². In the east, there's a steep cliff with a central plateau and a rainforest. This island is a lot of unique flora and fauna that are found only on the island, including Tiger-tailed lemurs, which are far away from the continent of Africa.
マダガスカル島は、日本の国土面積の約1.5倍の広さを持つ、世界で4番目に大きな島である。先史時代にゴンドワナ超大陸の分裂に伴いアフリカ大陸から分かれ、さらにその後の8800万年前ごろにインド亜大陸とも分離して形成された。他の大陸と生物種の往来が少ない孤立した状態が長く保たれたため、島内の生態系を構成する各生物種が独特の進化を遂げた。
호랑이 꼬리 원숭이는 유일하게 마다가스카르에만 서식하는 종이다. 100종 이상의 야생이 서식한다.
