몰타의 수도 한복판에서 재미있어 보이는 남자가 운영하는
다채롭고 화려한 구불구불한 구조물을 본 적이 있나?
바로 테라맥스카와 그 운영자인 마리 반 루이(Mari Van Rooy)다
그는 네델란드 출신으로 1977년 이민자다.
테라막스카(terramaxka)는 수도의 번화한 거리에 즐거운 음악과
멜로디를 전달하는 데 사용된 오래된(정확히 19세기 후반) 악기다.
이 악기는 오르간과 같아서 다양한 버전이 있지만
이 악기는 소유자(당시에는 당나귀)가 \
밀어서 지나가는 사람들의 관심을 끌었다.
테라막스카(terramaxka)라는 단어는 마법의 기타를 의미하는
몰타어 Kitarra Magica에서 유래되었다.
영어로 이 악기는 스트리트 오르간,
크랭크 오르간, 배럴 오르간, 페어 오르간 등
다양한 이름으로 불린다.
스트리트 오르간은 19세기 후반 프랑스, 스위스 등
유럽 국가에서 몰타로 수입되었다.
몰타에서는 매우 다양한 기관을 발견할 수 있다.
가장 일반적인 테라막스카는 일반적으로 버스커의 목에 걸고

The terramaxka is an old (late 19th century to be exact) musical instrument used
to bring merry music and melodies to the bustling streets of the capital.
The instrument is like an organ, and while there are different versions,
or a donkey back in the day), attracting passers-by.
The word terramaxka comes from the Maltese words kitarra magica,
which means, magical guitar. In English, this instrument
, is given a variety of names including, street organ, crank organ, barrel organ, fair organ
and so forth. Street organs were imported into Malta from European countries such
as France and Switzerland during the late nineteenth century.
A huge diversity of these organs could be found in Malta.
The most common terramaxka was a very lightweight organ usually
hung around the neck of the busker and rested on a small pole.
These were operated using punched cards
All genres of music were played including the tango,
operas, polka, and waltzes. Some organs were operated
by a crank turned by hand. Others were larger, usually decorated
with flags and small wooden statues, these were driven by a donkey
or the owner himself and attracted many young children. Similar to
nowadays jukeboxes were the coin-operated organs, called café organs,
which were more commonly found in cafés and pubs popular to sailors. Finally
, there were also terramaxkas found in the homes of wealthy people.
These organs used to be richly ornamented with gold and precious stones.
The terramaxkas were common in the Maltese islands
and were frequently exhibited to the public in local fiestas
where the noisy bands were out of the way. Unfortunately,
these marvelous instruments have long been gone, some sold to Americans
and others were broken. Luckily, we have the only terramaxka left
on the Maltese Islands to bring back the memories of our ancestors.
