아일랜드 간판들

아일랜드 더블린 중심가에는 영어 간판만 있는 것이 아니다.

아시아에서 가장 관심 증폭의 나라 일본 그런데 간판을 보면

신문사 간판, 담배 판매점, 주니치 스포츠. 아사비 에비 생선가게

다양하지만 매우 오래된 간판들이다.

최소 50년이 넘은 간판들이 아일랜드 더블린에 술집이나 인테리어로 사용

하고 있어 신기하기도 했다.

마치 영국 의류 회사가 슈퍼 드라이라는 이름으로

모든 옷 표면에는 엉터리 일본어지만 폭발적 인기를 끌고 있다.

 

그런데 아일랜드 더블린에는 일본인이 그다지 많지도 않고

일본 스시 전문점이나 일본 레스토랑도 주인이 전부 중국인이다. 

물론 아사히 가라구치 즉 매운 맛 맥주나 일본 정종들이 수입되고 있다.

이들이 의외로 일본을 매우 좋아한다는 점을 들고 싶다.

일본은 네델란드, 터키, 더구나 아일랜드와 영국과도 매우 밀접한 관계

를 지속하고 있다. 간판의 내용은 몰라도 일본에 대한 선망의 나라임은 

확실하다.

Ireland follows the Gregorian calendar but a growing number of people celebrate the Celtic Wheel calendar festivals of Samhan/Halloween (Oct 31st), Winter Solstice (21st Dec), Imbolc (Feb 1st), Spring Equinox (Mar 21-23rd), Bealtaine (May 1st), Summer Solstice (June 21st), Lughnasa (August 1st), Autumn Equinox (Sept 20-24th), now that the Catholic church is in decline.	Japan follows the Gregorian calendar, but also uses the traditional Japanese calendar which is based on the reign period of the Emperor.  The current emperor is called Reiwa.  He ascended to the throne in 2018, so 2021 is the third year of the Reiwa dynasty.

In the past, Irish women (and children)were treated badly by the state and church, especially if they were unmarried mothers.  They were forced into marriages or sent to Laundries to work unpaid until their babies were born.  After forced adoptions they were often secretly packed off to England to start new lives, or else live their lives pretending that they never had a baby. When Irish people are speaking English, they speak about themselves a lot using the word ‘I’.  it gets very confusing when they try to speak Japanese. When Irish people speak about their family they only say ‘brother’ or ‘sister’.  If you want to know anything else, you have to ask. Ireland is one of the most heavily regulated country in Western Europe.  One theory about why there are so many laws, is that the Irish tend to break at least half of them.  Rebellion and defiance are possibly linked to its troubled history with colonialism.	Japan is a very law-abiding society.  Japanese people tend to behave themselves in case their actions will bring shame on their families/ community.
Irish people are traditionally self-conscious about their bodies.  For years the church teachings fostered a culture of sexual repression, which was embedded into the Irish DNA.  The cold weather also puts people off ‘going out naked’.	Japanese people have a healthy regard for their bodies.  The public washing and bathing rituals are embedded in the culture, with a respectful attitude in the hot springs, dotted around the country.

Irish people are ‘starving’ when they eat their dinner, so its eaten quickly and the wash up is done as soon as possible after, to get it over with. The traditional Irish breakfast is fried rashers (bacon), sausages, black and white pudding, potatoes, eggs, baked beans, toast, washed down with a pot of very strong tea and milk.
