이슬람 국가들의 국기에는 대부분 초승달과 별이 그려져 있다. 그 이유는 예언자 무함마드가 알라로부터 최초의 계시를 받던 밤하늘에 초승달과 별이 나란히 떠 있었기 때문이다. 다시 말해 이슬람교에서 초승달과 별은 진리의 시작을 의미한다. 또한 이슬람에서는 우상 숭배가 엄격하게 금지되어 있기 때문에 사람이나 동물의 형상 대신에 추상적인 문양이 자주 쓰였다. 초승달과 별이 이슬람을 상징하며 건축물이나 국기 등에서 자주 사용된 것도 이러한 종교적 신념에서 비롯된 것이다.
