영국식 영어를 사용하는 아일랜드

영국식 영어와 미국식 영어의 차이가 바로 A다.

 A를 어로 발음하는가, 아로 발음하는가로 달라진다.

예를 들어 Andrew 엔드류라고 하면 미국식 영어

안드류라고 하면 영국식 발음이다.

이러한 것은 자주 나타난다. a Taxi미국식 영어에

익숙한 필자는 어 택시라고 하지만 여기서는 아 택시라고 한다.

Wrap은 랍이라고 하고 미국에서는 랩이라고 한다.

비닐랩, 음식을 싸는 모든 것도 랍이라고 한다. 

 

이러한 발음만 아니다. 포테이토칩은 여기서는 wedges-웨지

원래는 조각이란 뜻인데 문 받침이라는지,작은 조작들을 말한다

하지만 대부분 레스토랑에서 웨지라고 하면 포테이토 칩이다.

 

치킨튀김도 fillet이라고 한다. 뼈없는 가슴살이라고 하는데

일본에서는 가라아게라고 한다. 

Cajon chicken, Tikka chicken, Taco 등 매우 다른 언어의 음식이 많다.

고추 피클은 Jarapeno 라고 하며 stuffing은 칠면조를 잘게 잘라 

양념한 것을 말한다. 또한 Pudding이라고 하면 대개 단 맛의 디저트로 

알고 있을 것이다. 하지만 영국과 아일랜드는 소세지 종류의 돼지고기로

만든 동그란 것을 퍼딩이라고 한다. 

무엇을 주문하려고 해도 이름을 전혀 몰라서 혼란을 겪는 사람도 많을 것이다. 

아래 도표 중 줄서기인 queue 는 실생활에서 사용하는 중요한 단어다. 

아일랜드와 영국은 트럭을 로리라고 한다. lorry   /   truck

The most significant differences between British and American English 

are in their pronunciations, their vocabularies, and their spelling. 

There are grammatical differences, too, but these are less important 

and harder to describe, so we will pass over them for today.

Pronunciation

British English and American sound noticeably different. 

The most obvious difference is the way the letter r is pronounced. 

In British English, when r comes after a vowel in the same syllable

 (as in car, hard, or market), the r is not pronounced. 

In American English the r is pronounced.
