그리스 역사적으로는 헬라 또는 헬라스(Hellas)로 알려져 있었으며, 그 음차 표기를 따라 한문으로 희랍(希臘)이라고도 일컫는다. 수도는 아테네이며, 주요 도시로는 테살로니키, 파트라, 이라클리오, 라리사, 볼로스, 요안니나, 카발라, 로도스, 세레스, 코린트 등이 있다.

남유럽의 발칸 반도를 바탕으로 유럽, 북아프리카, 아시아의 교차점에 위치한 국가로, 알바니아, 마케도니아 공화국, 불가리아와 북쪽 국경을 맞대고 있으며, 동쪽으로는 터키와 접한다. 그리스 본토의 동쪽과 남쪽으로는 지중해의 일부인 에게 해, 서쪽은 이오니아 해가 위치하며 1,400여 개에 달하는 섬과 바위가 흩어져 있다. 대표적으로 크레타, 로도스 섬, 산토리니 섬이 위치한 키클라데스 제도 등이 있으며 해안선 길이는 세계에서 11번째로 길다. 그리스는 냉전시기 공산주의 국가들과 인접하였고, 가상적국이던 터키의 영향으로 인하여 발칸 반도에서 강력한 군사력을 보유한 편으로, 그리스군은 유럽에서도 강한 편의 군사력을 유지하고 있다.

Greece is a country located in Southern Europe, with a population of approximately 11 million as of 2016. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki. Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, it shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the northeast. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, the Cretan Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Greece has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km (8,498 mi) in length, featuring a large number of islands, of which 227 are inhabited. Eighty percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak at 2,918 metres (9,573 ft). The country consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands.
